Choosing a capstone question that can be synthesized
The single highest-leverage decision in the entire project is the research question, and psychology students face a specific trap: the field is so broad that almost any topic sounds workable. A question like "How does social media affect teenagers?" is not a capstone question, it is a shelf of books. A question like "Is there a reliable association between passive social media use and depressive symptoms in adolescents, and does it differ by gender?" can actually be answered by a synthesis, because the literature on it is bounded, recent, and full of measurable disagreements worth analyzing. Before committing to a question, run one database search and check three things: are there at least eight to twelve peer-reviewed studies from roughly the last ten years directly on the question, do at least some of them disagree with each other, and do they use more than one method or population? If everything agrees and every study looks the same, you will have nothing to synthesize, only things to repeat. Productive disagreement in the literature is raw material, not a problem.
Also check the emotional distance. Students often pick topics with deep personal significance: a family member's diagnosis, their own mental health history. 1. It is organized by theme, not by source
A summary walks through studies in sequence: Smith found X, Jones found Y, Lee found Z. A synthesis is organized around the ideas: one section on the strength of the core association, one on proposed mechanisms, one on moderating variables, one on measurement problems. Individual studies appear wherever they are relevant, often in more than one section. If your paragraph topic sentences name authors instead of ideas, you are summarizing.
2. It compares findings within each theme
Within each thematic section, a Distinguished synthesis puts studies in direct conversation: three studies found a moderate association, two found none, and the two null results both used a measurement approach the others did not. That last clause is the actual synthesis move, connecting a disagreement in findings to a difference in method.
3. It explains contradictions instead of just reporting them
Every real literature contains conflicting results. Basic work ignores them, Proficient work notes them, Distinguished work explains them: different operational definitions, different populations, cross-sectional versus longitudinal designs, self-report versus behavioral measures. In psychology specifically, operational definitions do enormous work. Two studies of "social media use" that measure screen time versus active posting are not measuring the same construct, and saying so is exactly the kind of analysis scoring guides reward.
4. It weighs evidence rather than counting it
Distinguished synthesis does not treat all studies as equal votes. A preregistered longitudinal study with a large representative sample deserves more weight than a small convenience-sample survey of undergraduates, and your text should say so explicitly. 5. It states conclusions with calibrated confidence
The conclusion of a strong synthesis is neither "the research proves" nor "more research is needed" as a reflex. It is a calibrated claim: the evidence consistently supports a modest association, the causal direction remains unresolved because nearly all designs are correlational, and the effect appears weaker in studies with more diverse samples. That sentence pattern, claim plus confidence level plus reason, is what scientific writing at this level sounds like.

- Leaning on secondary sources. Textbooks, review websites, and popular psychology books cannot anchor a capstone. Evaluators expect peer-reviewed primary studies, with review articles used for orientation, not as substitutes.
